Introduction to Video Editing (Adults) (Term1)

Course content & format

Build on your editing basics and learn how to craft more polished videos with stronger pacing, cleaner audio, and a consistent visual style. This course is designed for adults who have completed an introductory editing course (or have equivalent basic experience) and want to develop more confident, creative and efficient editing skills.

Key areas include:

  ● Organising projects efficiently: folder/bins, naming, timelines, backups and tidy workflows

  ● Editing for story and pace: trimming with purpose, J/L cuts, continuity and sequencing

  ● Working with audio: dialogue clean-up basics, balancing levels, music, and simple fades

  ● Titles and graphics: improved titling, lower thirds, captions, and keyframing simple motion

  ● Colour improvement: matching shots, basic correction and simple stylistic looks

  ● Using effects and transitions with restraint to support the story

Exporting confidently for different platforms (web, social, HD/4K) and avoiding common quality issues Sessions are practical and workshop-based, combining demonstrations, guided tasks, short challenges and time to work on a small project with tutor support.

Your unique experience

You will learn in a supportive adult-learning environment with regular tutor feedback and clear step-by-step guidance, while also developing more independence as you build skills.

Learning is hands-on and project-based, with access to:

  ● Video editing workstations and/or supported software options

  ● Headphones and audio monitoring for clearer sound work

  ● Sample footage, audio and graphics assets to practise with (and guidance for using your own)

  ● Tutor support to help you improve workflow, storytelling and technical quality

Throughout the course you will develop more control over your edits, improve the overall finish of your videos and learn efficient habits that make editing faster and more enjoyable.

Entry Qualifications

Intermediate

No formal entry requirements, but this course is not for complete beginners.

You should have completed an introductory video editing course or be able to: import media and organise a simple project make basic cuts on a timeline add simple titles and audio export a video file successfully.

How is this course assessed?

Assessment is through practical work completed across the course. There are no formal exams.

You will produce evidence of skill development through short tasks and a small final project. Evidence may include:

  ● edited sequences demonstrating pace, continuity and improved decision-making

  ● audio balancing and basic clean-up work

  ● titles/graphics and simple keyframed movement

  ● basic colour correction or shot matching

final exports for different platforms evaluation and reflection notes from feedback

On successful completion you could:

  ● Progress to an advanced video editing or post-production course

  ● Explore specialist areas such as colour grading, audio post, motion graphics or content creation

  ● Develop a personal project (short film, documentary, event video, YouTube channel or social content)
