Level 3 Graphic Design

Course content & format

This is a full-time study programme. You will learn to use visual communication (still, moving and interactive text and imagery) to sell, promote or influence an audience into consuming a product, service or idea across a range of platforms. This will involve combining creativity with practical problem-solving, always taking into consideration the client and audience.

The course is designed to give you the breadth and depth of skills and experiences needed to progress either to university, a creative apprenticeship or go straight into employment, ready to hit the ground running. You will learn how to use a wide range of the Adobe Creative Cloud applications and more, giving you the competitive edge needed to succeed.

Throughout the course you will study 4 units in total:

Year One

A1 – Skills Building - 3 live projects: 2D, 3D and 4D exploring a wide range of traditional and digital skills and techniques.

A2 – Creative Project – 1 live project chosen from a national competition that allows you to explore further some or all of what you have experienced already.

Year Two

B1 – Progression - Research and Portfolio.

Explore where you are going next – university, apprenticeships and employment investigated and a portfolio built to support this.

B2 – Creative Industry Response

A self-directed project devised by you, with a real client that allows you to specialise in the area that most interests you.

Your unique experience

You will tackle live projects, with real clients in order to gain the necessary commercial experience and soft skills to succeed. In addition, you will experience working collaboratively across the C07 Creative department and will use a wide range of workshops and facilities – photographic, film, audio, printmaking, lasercutting etc.

The college regularly organises trips to enrich learning and project work, as well as excursions to museums and art galleries in Manchester and the North West.

Entry Qualifications

Level 3 (Advanced)

- 5 GCSEs grade 4 or above including mathematics and/ or English.

You will be interviewed for this course and should be enthusiastic about working in the creative industries, demonstrate your skills and creativity (traditional and digital) in addition to strong verbal and written communication skills. You will also be given an enrolment task to complete before the start of the course. and be willing to participate in work experience. A creative/art GCSE is preferred but certainly a demonstrable interest in graphic design, art, photography, design technology.

How is this course assessed?

100% Coursework.

On this course you will receive project briefs that will introduce you to a scenario, question or creative challenge to solve. This will take you on a creative journey that will require you to follow a clear design process - research, generate ideas, experiment/test, produce, present and review.

This is a graded course where you can achieve a triple Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*

All of this will be supported through specialist skills-building workshops, group and one-to-one discussions, tutorials, virtual learning environments, clear guidance, personal feedback and pastoral work. Staff in this area pride themselves on their ability to work with each individual learner to realise their creative potential.

What can I do next?

On successful completion of this qualification, you can progress onto:

- On completion of the first year you will progress onto year 2 which is equivalent to 3 A levels. This will enable you to enter University at undergraduate level in a wide range of creative subject areas.

- An Apprenticeship or degree level Apprenticeship - social media content production, web design and content creation, marketing, photography, UX/UI etc.
