Connor makes history with Classics Association victory

Connor Irving, an A-level classics student at Clarendon Sixth Form College, takes first prize in the renowned Lytham St Annes Classics Association competition.

Connor, a former Blue Coats High School pupil, delivered a presentation to over 100 guests at AKS Independent School on which figures from the ancient world he would invite to a party and why.

For the presentation, Connor selected Hades – the god of the underworld in Greek mythology, Medea – the mother of the minotaur and Pasiphae – Medea’s aunt.

Dr Arlene Holmes-Henderson, research fellow at King’s College London, presented first prize to Connor, who was up against three other students. The judges were impressed with Connor’s careful selection of classical figures and in-depth description.

Lytham St Annes Classics Association was founded in 2014 and delivers regular lectures exploring the history, art, culture and language of ancient Rome and Greece. Its president is well known professor and broadcaster, Michael Scott.

Rebecca Andrews, classics teacher at Clarendon Sixth Form College, said: “Connor has done exceptionally well to win and was up against some tough competition, including last year’s winner. To present in front of a large crowd confidently and with a high level of subject knowledge, for the first time, is a huge feat. Congratulations to Connor”
